CUBAN ISOLATION POLICY - A FAILURE AFTER 50 YEARS..OPEN CUBA

For over 50 years - the USA has boycotted Cuba, with a misguided policy that a boycott would bring down Fidel Castro and his regime.

Well after 50 years, by any measure this policy has been a failure - Fidel and Raul Castro remain in power and the Cuban people suffer - frozen in time.

President Obama has taken small steps - but he must declare an unilateral end to the boycott of Cuba - and Open Cuba to all Americans who wish to travel and/or reunite with family and friends. No restrictions - let American bring their dollars and voices of freedom - let the Cuban people begin to feel the freedom - even if Fidel and Raoul benefit, in the short run.

A program on CNBC (Escape from Havana:An American Story)about 14,000 children secretly flown out of Cuba in the 1960's and their stories is a compelling story of survival and of the failure of US policy.

These children now seniors - some feel Cuba must be open and that American policy, that they once supported, is wrong - and the USA must open trade and travel to Cuba.

What 'pain' is the Detroit City Council 'sharing' -

DPD just lost Officer Huff...they are understaffed (1000++), under equipped and undertrained and don't have enough jail space to house their prisoners..

A 7yr old girl is dead, a 17 year old is dead, a 69 yr old grandmother is dead etc etc etc
...criminals know that dpd is short jail space ...cant respond in a timely manner and the are
rewarded with even more cuts in the police budget....wrong wrong wrong

The mayor, council and pc need to sit down together and see where more money can do the most good...and what needs to be done to improve the dpd....(fed money).....

Crime should be the #1 issue in Detroit - we need an all out war on crime and guns -
but the Detroit City Council wants to cut $6. million dollars from the police budget - that is incredibly stupid, shortsighted, and wrong and that is on top of the Mayor's cuts.

The DPD needs some structural changes to increase efficiencies:

adopt a Verified Response System for B&E alarms (to allow officers to respond faster to crimes in progress - and to stop them from being security guards for alarm companies).

get an agreement to use the WC jails/medical facilities for Detroit prisoners ( 1/2 of the jail cells were closed by xPC Cummings).

get rid of Crisnet report system (keeps officers in police stations too long / see Haddad memo)

raise the hiring standards - 2yrs college / military service, better background checks and better training...

The City Council and the Mayor must go to Washington, as a group, and get Federal funding (Homeland Security - special grants - etc) ...to get the money to hire officers, buy better equipment and to train and retrain officers.

If Council Chairman Pugh - doesn't understand this - and the Council doesn't act to improve the DPD, now - this will be indeed a bad summer for Detroit. Budget cuts is not proactive to solve Detroit's crime problem - it is a regressive - dangerous action that will cost residents lives.

The time to talk to your parents and your children about - your death - is now, when you are living and can make a decision on how you want to end your life - with care and dignity.

Sarah Palin, and Republican attempts to be disingenuous, misleading and wrong made this important discussion sound wrong - her 'death panels' comments lead people to believe that the government wanted to tell you how and when to die. Wrong - making that decision is one of the most important you will ever make - for your self and family.

Talking about Death is not easy, but necessary - you need to plan for the disposition of your property / wealth and how you want to die - slowly losing control of your body, your mind - or with dignity with grace. You need a will and a medical power of attorney, so that the person you chose to make your last decision - knows when and how you want the decision to be made, not at the last minute with or without passion - but with reason and properly thought out.

Medical discoveries can make us live longer than ever before and new medicines can preserve our lives - but it is the quality of life, that matters - not just life itself.

When our quality of life is over - its over - don't let your family be divided - love for you and your decision, is what matters, don't let your family be torn apart, guilt ridden - because you failed to let your final decision be known.

Dr. Jack Kervorkian - was right - Michigan and our country need to face this issue - and to allow people to die with dignity and grace - at the time of their chosing.

There is no War on Guns...if so the NRA would be spending millions of dollars trying to prevent the War...depicting President Obama as an anti-American whatever, who doesn't

But what we have now is an Arms Race - the more guns you have the safer you are ....but that isn't true - 25,000 Mexicans have been killed by guns purchased in the US Southwest states and smuggled over the border - because owning a gun larger that a .38 caliber is considered a military weapon, in Mexico.

The Mexican drug cartels, Mexican gangsters have to protect themselves from the big Mexican government that is trying to eradicate them. The cartels are killing, men, women, children, musicians, politicians, judges, police officers, soldiers, anyone that stands between them and their next drug deal, and US gun dealers are aiding and abetting the cartels, apparently with no remorse, conscience or regrets - because the bottom lines is that selling guns to the Mexicans is highly highly profitable....

President Obama has enough on his agenda...but an assault weapons ban and strict enforcement of gun laws in the Southwest would provoke a fire storm of discontent - that may undermine his efforts..but it is something that Congress - must take up on their own and face down the National Rifle Association, during an election year, to save lives US and Mexican lives - The NRA should no longer be the most powerful lobby in the US - and people should no longer be allowed to buy an AK-47 or FN 5.7 (cop killer gun) and we must change the culture in America - that owning guns is a birthright - this is not 1776, the British and Indians have been defeated.

PO Huff was lost because of a 'ARMS RACE' and loose and easy access to guns (and not enough Detroit jail space)...no 10 year should have to again hear that 'dad isn't coming home' because Congress fails in its responsibility to stand up to the NRA.

Why????? were ignorant, divisive, stupid, inflammatory, wrong comments put in news articles about the killing of a Detroit police officer and the wounding of four officers, by Ron Scott, whose racist comments should have been excluded and ignored - in these articles.

Scott cited statistics that may or not be wrong, but certainly don't tell accurately the story -but were inappropriate ....his statements, which could have been mouthed by a spokesman for the Hutaree...or any hate organization that want to stir up anti police sentiments and fears.

Wake UP - Detroit - you need not fear Detroit Police Officers - fear the black / African-American murderers, rapist, robbers, b&e men, muggers, car thieves that are praying on you - your husband, wife, children, neighbors and friends. Black on Black crime should be your fear - and the police your ally, help them fight crime and criminals.

Ron Scott, director of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, called for a full investigation and expressed concern that the killing of the officer would ramp up tensions between police and the community.

Ron Scott, president of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, said the shooting could be the result of heightened animosity between residents and the police.

He said citizen complaints have jumped 208% this year, mostly stemming from Evans' Mobile Strike Force, which is comprised of units dispatched to crime hot spots to head off suspicious activity and confiscate illegal weapons. Scott said that some officers have unfairly profiled young, black men and used excessive force without probable cause.

Evans said Scott's comments were insensitive and ignorant. The chief said the suspect's rap sheet, which includes convictions on fleeing and eluding police and attempting to disarm an officer, indicate he has been aggressive toward police before.

Detroit needs an all out - War on Crime.

The death of Detroit PO Brian Huff and wounding of four other officers should be the last straw, the final spark that will get powerful Detroit black ministers off their bibles and get them onto their pulpits and pounding them and telling their members that it is alL right to call police and 'turn in' a murderer, robber, rapist, drug house, drug pusher, a B&E man/team, car thieves.

Mayor Bing, at every Detroit church, must also get up and declare that the police are not an occupying army or an army of oppressors and that residents should not fear police officers, that are trying to protect them from criminals, who have no concern for Detroit or its residents. We must change the culture in Detroit - that make residents accept crime and fear the police.

The Mayor should tell Ron Scott to shut up - and not to denigrate officers and to cooperate with the police department to make it better - not to help spread the fear and suspicion about police officers. The Board of Police Commissioners must be more visible and active
in making the Department better and accepted by the residents.

The ministers, Mayor and City Council member should commit themselves to making crime - the number one concern that needs to be solved - and make public safety Detroit's No. 1 problem.

Former Ella Bully Cummings should be held accountable for this officers death - you can't arrest criminals - when there is not enough jail space to put them in (she closed 1/2 of the jail cells in Detroit). Cummings created a now failed Reorganization Plan, failed to supervise the progress of the DOJ decrees, and violated EEOC laws. Cummings failed police officers and residents of Detroit, and the problems she created have not been solved.

Mayor Bing and the City Council must seek federal grants to get Detroit Police - state of the are equipment, hire and train more officers and to make DPD the best police department in the country. This cant be done just at the city level - it will also take a commitment from the State and Federal governments.

I have always offered to be a resource...and spoken out about the problems and solutions that are needed to make the DPD better - hopefully someone will begin to listen now.

The news media must take an active role in examining bad policies and the lack of progress and why problems remain unsolved year after year. (crisnet / lack of jail space-medical facility/ lack of facilities and equipment/ lack of quality leadership - just a few)

ARIZONA IMMIGRATION LAWS, ENFORCEMENT, POLICE OFFICERS

I am retired detroit police officer.....

Still applicable today..........affects everyone..

I responded to a b&e report at a construction site, years ago...when i tried to get info..and see who made the call...no one spoke english...not one of over 8 people...
I called INS & Border Patrol...and each put me off...claiming they didn't have manpower to investigate illegal aliens at a job site...finally border patrol said they would 'refer' the matter to a job site task force...i believe they never investigated the situation...and i never got a call asking for information...

The situation was dangerous because i couldn't get info on anything...couldn't eventually ID anyone, no one seemed to be supervising the construction (let alone construction standards)...and couldn't determine if a crime had occurred - which means additional crimes could still be occurring and workers lives could have been endangered..and later i was told i couldn't investigate or even question immigration status, because we weren't trained and had no authority....that is wrong...

Early in my career around 1979 ..working a morality / vice unit...we raided a blind pig in the Delray area - and called the border patrol because possible immigration violations and a border patrol officer responded and made several arrests...and we worked well together...

INS ...Border Patrol ....DPD dont have enough officers or agents to enforce immigration laws - which is dangerous to the aliens and national security.....

But working together...we can show some enforcement and be a deterrent...all law enforcement officers local police and state police should have authority to inquire and detain suspected illegal aliens....if they cant speak english - can't produce a green card,a passport,or visa..that is probable cause - not profiling....No race, religion, or ethnicity involved.

Local police agencies shouldn't be bogged down enforcing immigration laws - but they shouldn't have to ignore the enforcement....cooperation....will make us safer - for all........

The Republican Party has become the party of 'nattering nabobs of negativism' – they are the party of NO NO NO, at a time when our country needs leadership and courage in its elected leaders, the Republican members of Congress have chosen – to oppose, rather than contribute to the challenges of the day and of the future.

The Republican Congress members have failed to lead and take part in the debate to contribute to the Health Care Reform Bill – not really out of personal disagreements but for political gain. They are using every excuse: abortion funding, expansion of government control, lack of choice, big brotherism, and contributed to fear and anxiety by failing to present their own health care plan or to quietly and rationally develop health care that has been requested by past presidents – including President Harry S. Truman over 63 years ago.

Health Care Reform is too important of an issue for Republicans just to say: NO NO NO…they must decide on Sunday – what is most important, then next election or the fate of 31 million uninsured Americans, the health of our nation or their fancy offices.

The Republican Congress should vote 100% - shock the country and the world for the Health Care Reform Bill and then work to create a Bill that everyone can support.

Why don't fellow members of the Detroit City Council or friends of Monica Conyers and JoAnn Watson tell them to 'stifle it' or just plain 'shut up'.

Their comments are further damaging the image of Detroit, the Council and themselves providing further reasons to look beyond Detroit to the suburbs for leadership and intelligent city government.

Monica in a Detroit News article again tries to comment on the Cobo Hall deal and justinvites ridicule and shows her ignorance. JoAnn Watson blames the media for her ignorance and serious lack of common sense and discretion.

Detroiters will benefit from the Cobo Hall deal, as it stands - now, and even if tweaked by Mayor Bing - they will get to keep their jobs at restaurants, bars, casinos and other businesses that cater to Cobo conventioneers and visitors. Detroit will get to keep or increase the tax revenue that Cobo generates, if it remains viable and improved.

Detroit will enhance its tarnished image and reputation if a renovated and improved Cobo Hall attracts more conventions and visitors and positive comments spread, throughout the country.

Requesting set asides and special job quotas only makes Detroit look desperate and needy. A city that has to have special consideration because it has poor schools, and an uneducated work force. Rather than residents who are educated and ready to compete for any job that Cobo can create or needs. Black residents should be ashamed that Conyers and other council members thinks so little of them and their abilities, while professing to be their champions.

A succession of Detroit Mayors and Council members have allowed Cobo Hall to fall into severe disrepair - a city building engineer told me - it should closed and condemned. They have failed year after year to make necessary repairs and improvements needed to make Cobo a viable convention center. They have failed to control union contracts and costs associated with attracting and keeping convention business. How many businesses and companies have bit their tongues and used Cobo for a convention - because of loyalty to Detroit and a willingness to help it survive.

Cobo Hall is a disgrace - a negative factor in moving Detroit forward, take a walking tour for yourself, look at the ceilings (protect your eyes during rain storms), go downstairs into the basement, look at the loading docks - and you will see that any attempt to renovate Cobo would be a chore a major undertaking - and a blessing to the City of Detroit.

Detroit can only benefit...and Detroit residents need leadership to embrace the opportunity to make Cobo Hall - a great convention center.

And JoAnn Watson - OMG, blasphemy - using a prayer session in front of her home - to invoke God - to try and fool Detroit residents into believing that God is on her side - despite her totally unbelievable story about her home assessment and failure to pay her fair share of property taxes. A council woman that is that ignorant and deceitful must resign - but won't - so Detroit residents must rise up and tell her too. Watson tries to blame the media for her serious lack of common sense and discretion - fellow council member should tell to pay up and 'shut up'.

Doesn't go far enough...Detroit has less than 900,000 residents and nine (9) council members - too many...the residents should demand that the city charter be amended to reduce the number of council members to five or seven, which would also create a budget
savings and a more efficient council. But this in not about to happen, so the state must step in and use whatever powers it has to reduce the council membership.

Detroit has a dearth, a shortage of quality leaders - the black ministers of Detroit have failed to use their moral leadership to improve Detroit. While Detroit drifts they remain silent. Wether it was Kilpatrick or Conyers they have failed to forcefully speak out demanding ethical leadership and an end to racial baiting politics. They need to tell Conyers to 'shut up' and the rest of the Council to do their jobs ethically and efficiently.

If the guy in the photograph looks familiar, that's because David Malhalab has been a Detroit media gadfly for years.

Malhalab, 58, started popping up in publications like the Free Press in the 1980s, when he was one of the few Detroit street cops who would talk to reporters. Back then, and even today, talking to the media without approval could be risky to a career.

But Malhalab always talked. And e-mailed. And talked. Sometimes the media ignored him; sometimes he made it onto the airwaves and into print.

He's no longer a cop, but he still talks. Just this month he popped up with Huel Perkins on Fox 2's "Let it Rip."

You have to wonder what makes a guy like Malhalab tick.

QUESTION: David, you and I have known each other for years. ... What in the world made you decide to become the self-appointed spokesman for Detroit police?
ANSWER: Because I saw the lack of training, lack of equipment, the nepotism, the favoritism and the cronyism was having a detrimental effect on police officers and the delivery of police services to Detroit residents.

Q: You lived through a number of different chiefs. Who was your favorite?
A: None of 'em!

Q: If you had to choose one of them to be your chief today, which would it be?
A: None of 'em!

Q: If you had to.
A: If I had to? (Laughs.) Probably Chief Hart.

Q: Really? The guy who stole $2.6 million from the secret service fund? Had money fall from the ceiling of his home? Went to federal prison?
A: In terms of being a police officer, not being hurt by a chief, William Hart was probably our better chief. ... I'm not condoning what he did.

Q: You ever get any grief from coworkers, family or friends about talking so much? Do they ever say, 'David, just give it up!' "
A: I've had some criticism. "Oh, you're on TV too much." ... All I say is, "I'll give you the reporters' phone numbers. ... You tell 'em what you believe to be the truth, what you see is going on."

Q: Will you ever shut up?
A: (Laughs.) When I'm finally cremated, I think you may have heard the last from me.

Q: What else should I ask?
A: I'm single. Looking for a fun, enjoyable woman that wasn't astonished at my appearance on "Let it Rip."

American Indians History Month, Indian Casinos - Honor the Agreements

Congress and every state needs to enact and make official an 'American Indian History Month' - so that all Americans, adults, children and others learn of the tortured history of native Americans, who were robbed of their lands, infected with disease, forced to live on land that was once theirs, and had their children taken from them - to save them? and educate them?.

And of how we have systematically tried to destroy their heritage and culture.It is a sad tale of betrayal, lies, broken treaties and death. But it is history that must be give a special designation, promoted and discussed - so that we learn from the experiences and work toward a reconcilitation. It is not being taught in schools.

The current Michigan Casino controversy over wether to allow Indian casinos in Romulus and Port Huron, is a tiny part of the story, Mayor Kilpatrick and his mother, Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick oppose them - because they will be competition for Detroit, that is not a proper argument. Former Michigan Governor John Engler entered into an agreement with the Tribes, - Michigan should support the agreement - or have objected before and/or just after the agreement was signed - not now - years later.

Land shopping is not an issue because Engler entered into and signed an agreement, go forward with the deal. Congress should approve it and let not another broken promise be delivered to the Indians.The American Indians have had to endure enough broken promises and treaties.

Some American Indians have rejected $800 million dollars for the deed to sacred lands in the Black Hills of the Dakotas because they want their land. It should be given back to them.

Congress should lead the way - approve an American Indian History Month, honor the Engler deal, and give the sacred lands of the Dakotas back to the original owners - now.

PS: Native Hawaiians, also need their story told, of how the USA conspired to take their lands, destroy their heritage and culture.

Are you going to vote for Monica Conyers for Mayor.

I think she is building momentum, posing, posturing, positioning for the next mayoral campaign. It is now not about Cobo - but about Monica, who played the RACE card, and stirred up divisions that should be healing. She has poisoned the debate, the Cobo deal and the economic atmosphere in Detroit and Michigan. Her actions are hurting Detoit and Michigan and she doesn't get it - or fathom what she has done. Neither does Martha Reeves, JoAnne Watson, Barbara Rose Collins or Alberta Tinsley-Talabi who have increased racial tensions and divisions with their votes and bizarre actions.

Monica could face Cockrel or Bing, in the next Mayor election, both of whom, will be injured during the bruising campaign....she could easily label Bing - carpet bagger (which will be in Cockrel campaign) and Cockrel would be vulnerable on the Cobo deal - no matter how it turns out.

Detroit is $300 - 700 million dollars in debt.

The Detroit School System has an appointed state financial overseer and a bloated ineffective school board, whose members must be cut to five to seven (5 -7).

Detroit has lost 600,000+ residents....

Under Mayor Cockrel, the City of Detroit spends $15.4 million to operate the nine member City Council and another $11.8 million to operate the Mayor's Office itself ($27.2 million dollars). This budget must be slashed to the bare bones. Council member must be cut to five - seven (5 - 7).

So much is at stake in the Mayoral election, the Cobo deal, more must be done to save Detroit - before Detroit can't be saved - before Monica Conyers - for Mayor. Let a real debate begin - today..

DETROIT -- The fate of Detroit's Cobo Center remains in limbo as city council politics debate what to do with the crumbling structure.

But classic car owners and visitors to Autorama this weekend voiced their lack in patience as rain overwhelmed the tarps already hanging from Cobo's ceiling to collect water from melting snow -- creating dripping.

Leaky Cobo Dampens Autorama

On Saturday, pricey classic cars were on display at Cobo for the show. Hot rod owners who obsess over the slightest detail of their cars were irate.
"I'm cleaning, this beautiful '59 Galaxy 500, that took us 20 years to build, because Cobo is leaky nasty stuff from the ceiling. I mean this is salt water, it's rust, it's disgusting," said Roy Oberg.

Detroit City Council should be required and must hold all of their future Coucil meetings at Cobo Hall, under tarps collecting rain water and corrosive liquids leaking thru the ceiling.

The City Council may win their battle with the Mayor, in court, but their is no real assurances that the regional plan for Cobo will be renogiatied - so what will the Council - win - a deplorable 'a jewel of the city', a convention facility that they can't afford to repair or afford to subsidize. A facility that more and more conventions will ignore, and reject.

If the City Council wins - the Detroit Metropolitan Area LOSES.

The Rock Financial Center (Novi) should expand, and then use buses to transport exhibitors and visitors to its modern facility, as buses were used to transport people to Detroit from the surrounding areas.

Pontiac, the Big 4 and the Governor, should consider using the Silverdome as a convention anchor for a convention, retail and hotel hub. Oakland County is the economic center of region. A more centered area, safer area with less baggage than Detroit. Even in this hard economic times it would make sense to build a new convention center in this area - leaving Cobo to attract smaller boutique conventions - after it is rehabed and refurbished - $288 million isn't enough to expand.

Novi or Pontiac - maybe regional cooperation can decide what's the best location for a new convention area. Now is the time to decide.

ps. mayber Windsor, Canada should be exploring expanding the convention facilities it has...its just a short bus ride across the border. Maybe conventioneers will have a better time South of the Border - Canadian style.

I'm sorry John Gallagher chose to contact your organization for comment but then I've already given him my opinion of his story. Since my family and I have contributed nearly $500,000 dollars over the past decade to better educate the public on the stadium issue as it really was and try to assist the City of Detroit with making the best out of Tiger Stadium you can see why I resent your treatment towards people trying to create a positive out of a negative.

It is 110% true that the ILITCH family the City of Detroit and the DEGC have been no help working with those that had money to spend on the stadium. All this is fact which you could have concluded had you put in the effort. The Conservancy having raised nearly $400,000 through public contributions since last summer should be praised not shot down.

As my mother former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Dorothy Comstock Riley used to say if you cant set the record straight then you need to get your facts. The $3.8 million is about helping Corktown and improving the quality of life for Detroit's oldest neighborhood......now how can you do that without a plan. Coming with it is another $11 million dollars that the City of Detroit can use......money that with a corrupt City Government running amuck as I write never would have gotten on there own.

Saying this federal handout would “create jobs” is naïve. The important thing here, Dave, is to bring out the fact that the "precious money" doesn't go into some safe deposit box marked "Tiger Stadium." It pays the LOCAL people who will do the restoration work. It helps contractors and builders pay their employees, helps those employees put their kids through school, pay their medical bills, pay their mortgages...I could go on and on. We want people to earn that money by working on the stadium. LaFaive, whoever he is, probably would prefer to put them on the dole and give it to them directly. Now you tell me which approach really helps the economy and the city of Detroit, and which approach has long-term value.

Mr. Reed: I tend to ignore bombast as a general rule, but the charm and overwhelming tact of your last communication deserve considered response. For the record, I am a political conservative, a devout capitalist, and I am the first person to scream that there is no such thing as a free lunch. We will all pay -- dearly -- for the well-meaning naivete (your word) of our president and of Socialists everywhere.

However, to be so myopic as to dismiss good because it comes out of a larger evil is not just naive -- it falls in the category of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Tiger Stadium -- or, more properly, Navin Field -- is at this point probably worth not much more than the cost of its remaining demolition. In case you hadn't noticed, prices are down, including those of scrap. The land under Tiger Stadium possibly could be attractive to builders sometime in the next millenium, but, for the nonce, it is absolutely worthless.

The city hopes to "attract a developer." Perhaps it can choose one from the organizations queing up to redevelop the train station or the land where the Statler and Tuller once stood. Perhaps Bobby Ferguson could suggest a name or so, or, failing that, I'm sure that Bernard Kilpatrick knows somebody who could fake it and make the city look good for a nanosecond or so.
However, instead of being faced with the inevitable creation of one more very expensive parking lot, we offered an opportunity to create something good -- to let one small part of much-maligned Detroit rise like Phoenix out of the ashes.

We live in a nation determined to deny its own culture and, to a degree, its own history. In a world where whole societies derive a sense of place and identity by reveling in the cultural heritage bequeathed by preceding generations, America stands almost alone in its contempt for anything that does not have immediate (and usually commercial) significance.

Baseball is part of America's social history, a sport that reinvents itself each generation to match popular culture. Even the changing architecture of baseball stadia is a commentary both on structural advance and decline and on public expectation. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum rightly terms one its traveling exhibits, "Baseball as America."

We have in Detroit -- a city so often justifiably criticized -- a unique opportunity to preserve a small portion of the entire nation's heritage in a way that can ensure a local revenue flow from property otherwise destined to be part of an urban prairie. (Yes, that revenue flow is assured -- both from actual facility use, and from spinoff custom of area restaurants and -- in the case of youth tournaments -- hotels.)

It will take money to effect preservation, but it is important to realize that the money will not be squirreled away in some bank account, idle revenue from sale of an expensive ticket to nostalgia. The money is, deny it how you may, going to be paid to various businesses contracted to do restoration work. In short, it will be pumped directly into the state's struggling economy.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (and Herbert Hoover before him) looked to public works as an ideal way to utilize federal "stimulus" money -- ideal because construction of roads, dams, parks, and the like created jobs during their construction and provided ongoing benefit to the people who would use the facilities so constructed. We are offered $3.8 million that would otherwise be redirected in incentive-destroying quasi-Marxist giveaways.

We will use that money to help restore the original segment of a beloved public landmark, and then go on to use that restored landmark as a vehicle for instruction, entertainment, youth enrichment, and -- frankly -- as a much-needed tourist attraction. This represents an chance that only the most inflexible, narrow-minded, and otherwise limited of individuals would eschew.

If the City of Detroit, the DEGC and Mike Ilitch had not conspired to abandon and denigrate historic Detroit Tiger Stadium it would be a revenue producing entertainment center today and since 1999. Ilitch has taken $2-$12 million dollars, since 1999 to maintain and secure Tiger Stadium - tax payer dollars - a billionaire...He has failed to maintain and secure the Stadium and maybe under FBI investigation.

Members of the DEGC lied before members of the Detroit Planning Commission, which knew, that they were lying and rejected their proposal to demolish Tiger Stadium. A member of the DEGC lied to the Corktown Citizens Council - telling them that Tiger Stadium was to dangerous for them to tour and make an evaluation themselves.

100,000,000 (100 million) people have come to Tiger Stadium over the years, and would come today - as they do to Lambeau Field and Fenway Park and the Field of Dreams (IA) to see and be a part of history.

Tiger Stadium is viable...It is historic, and it can be a revenue producing tourist attraction - had not those like LaFaive, taking a wrong headed and ignorant view of the Stadium.

Cobo Hall is a millstone around the city of detroit. it is deteriorating facility that the city hasn't properly maintained. the lower level is disgusting and disgraceful example of what Detroit has become, a city devoid quality political leadership - a city that desperately needs leadership, but a city that continually falls short.

The defeat of the cobo hall expansion proposal should be the final straw that pushes the state of Michigan into a takeover of Detroit, it showed that Detroit city council aren't capable of separating political expediency from the real needs of Detroit.

Detroit is $300 - $700 million dollars in DEBT, and cobo was another drain on city finances. with the cobo expansion offered a chance that Cobo Hall could be renovated, rehabbed so that it could be restored as a jewel of the city - rather than an scarred neglected imitation of a quality convention facility.

Hotel - convention and other small business owners must now speak out and demand better leadership. Detroit residents that rallied to the false siren song of failed politicians, that they were saving a jewel and standing up against suburban interests, must be made to understand that they have been mislead, lied to and used as pawns that doesn't serve their best interests.

Courageous council members: Kwame Kenyatta, Brenda Jones, and Sheila Cockrel should be commended for trying to move Detroit forward, and rejecting - the race card. Detroiters should oust, recall these failed council members: Monica Conyers (maybe the feds will oust here), JoAnn Watson, Martha Reeves, Alberta Tinsley-Talabi and Barbara Rose Collins should condemned for voting against the Cobo proposal and against the best interest of Detroit.

I used to drive to work past bus riders waiting, waiting in cold blustery weather, on rainy days/nights, on windy days/nights with no protection - no where to sit during long waits for a bus to come. There are no bus shelters at Joy-WParkway, WWarren-Evergreen almost everywhere you look, there are NO bus shelters. And that has been - for year after year after year.

Detroit bus riders need buses that run on time, that are clean and BUS SHELTERS, that's basic...and that's what's needed NOW..not bike racks...

Detroit MDOT and the Feds should rethink this issue and allow Detroit to build - bus shelters with this money. But there needs to be accountability - where is the $20 million dollars for a new crime lab?

arrogant, smug, unremorseful....the mayor is in denial of his actions and the consequences of it.........he us unbowed.. he seemed desperate to rant at the judge - but finally agreed with his attorney - to stay silent, for his own good, but not really understanding his mouth would have gotten him in deeper.

he and his wife set a poor example for the public and young people...struggling to understand the significance of this situation....

When Mayor Cockrel announced James Barren as the Chief of Police we all heard him say that he would not be dipping into the police department; he would let Chief Barren run his shop. We received information that Chief Barren was set to name Ron Fleming his Assistant Chief but has been rebuffed by Cockrel and Deputy Mayor Saul Green.
The source said Green opposed the appointment. Fleming has a long history in law enforcement in Detroit dating back to the Coleman Young days. He later served as Deputy Chief of executive protection for Mayor Kilpatrick until he had run in's and disagreements with troubled Police Officers Loronzo Jones and Mike Martin, Kilpatrick's long time buddies.
Cockrel received kudos for his selection of Barren, Green and several other appointments from us . In an e-mail to us Mayor Cockrel denied any interference with Chief Barren. He said Chief Barren makes the calls but keeps him in the loop.

Young gets petitions - State Representative Coleman Young II has taken out petitions for a possible run for mayor. Young, 25, is among a list of 32 potential candidates.

WOW - Thanks to Fox2Detroit for LIVE coverage of Governor Granholm's Removal Hearings of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. The only Detroit station providing live gavel to gavel coverage - while others use the internet (assuming people have acess).

It will not be a ratings sucess, but it is in the Public Interest to have it on commercial tv versus just the internet, so that anyone interested may view the proceedings and not just those wealthy enough to have a computer.

The Governor is conducting herself and the hearings in a proper manner, that shows no bias..

But the most intriguing question is, and hasn't been asked is Why? with all the high priced attorneys that the Mayor is paying - Why? is he entrusting this important faze to Sharon McPhail? a woman who accused him of hotwiring her council seat - and who is clealy not had the legal experience of the other attorneys.

The Mayor should be removed from office - and he deserves his day in court - his presumption of innocence. He can get a fair trail. But he should not be Mayor while his days counting down to his trials' are counting down.

Deal or No Deal: Did Mayor Kilpatrick lawyers strike a deal? Yes or No - only a few people know for sure. But rumors were flying and the media went into frenzy mode - trying to be the first, and everyone got it wrong, because???

The Mayor has known the truth about his actions - if there is a plea deal it should include Jail Time, so that future elected politicians will understand that resigning their office - is not sufficient to make up for misconduct in office, for lying in court, and betraying the public trust.

We - our Country - the USA is about to nominate a black man for President, an historic event.

I watched as Robert Kennedy went across this Country speaking and engaging people and I watched his funeral. I watched as Lyndon B. Johnson was nominated. I watched Richard M. Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and others were nominated for President and watched as the uniquely American political conventions played out day after day - listened to the speeches, watched the people, watched the drama the chaos and tragedy of the 1968 Convention all live - for several nights - but now these unique events which come only once every four (4) years is denigrated, dismissed and ignored by TV networks whose bottom line is $$$$$ and not the Public Interest.

We watched the Olmpics from China - Live - for 14 days and nights - BUT get only glimpses of the uniquely American political conventions after 10 pm....How Outrageous - How sad...

The above is a link to a current Ebay auction of stolen items from historic Detroit Tiger Stadium in 2000.

Mike Ilitch was receiving $400,000. a year to maintain (as it was in 1999) and to provide security for historic Detroit Tiger Stadium. Obviously from the auction site, and from the general look of Tiger Stadium - now - Ilitch looks like he didn't spend a dime of the nearly, $2 - $12 million dollars he got from Detroit, a financailly ailing city.

While we celebrate the Red Wings Stanley Cup victory - remember the millions of dollars he has gotten from the City - for Tiger Stadium, with no obvious accountabilty! No one is above the law - Adolph Albert Taubman the billionaire went to jail - Shouldn't Mike Ilitch??

It seems to be a felony crime that the City is allowing to go unpunished. Ken Cockrel, Jr. told me that he believes that "Ilitch owes us the money" and that " I'll do whatever necessary to get it back" that was over at least a year ago, and he still has done nothing. Councilwoman Joanne Watson has also said, that she believes Ilitch owes the City money for Tiger Stadium. Why? is the Council so slow to recover millions of dollars - especially when Detroit has a deficit?? Do they worship Ilitch or are they afraid of him?

The Packard plant is litterally failing onto the streets of Detroit, the Train Station looms as a ominus tombstone over Detroit - there are dozens of abandon buildings throughout Detroit that are a danger to the public and have better economic locations for business- but there is no rush to demolish them. Why? the rush to demolish Tiger Stadium.

Legitimate proposals by upstanding businessmen were offered to use Tiger Stadium as a money making entertainment facility since 1999, those offers were ignored, dismissed or discouraged - there was no legitimate offer that the City would accept. Detroit has lost millions and millions of dollars - $$$$$$$, Why? There needs to be a criminal investigation.

George Jackson and members of the Detroit Economic Development Corporation have lied to the Corktown residents, the Detroit City Planning Commission, the residents of Detroit and Michigan. And yet the DEGC is getting its way - with the demolition of Tiger Stadium.

Detroit recieved about $300,000 for items sold at auction from Tiger Stadium - although no public final accounting has been released. That means that possibly millions of dollars worth of items were stolen from Tiger Stadium - in the manner described in the Ebay auction - and Ilitch should be held accountable for that.

There needs to be an investigation by the Detroit City Council, the Michigan State Police and the FBI into what public corruption was involved in the 'demolition by neglect' of Tiger Stadium and Why the City has lost millions of dollars for the use of Tiger Stadium since 1999, and the theft of items from Tiger Stadium, including the Historical Marker. The investigation must include Mike Ilitch, the DEGC and the Mayor.

Fenway Park is a town jewel and tourist attraction. Lambeau Field is a tourist attraction and town jewel (and TV star - in commercials seen by millions of Michigan residents). Tiger
Stadium should have been a tourist attraction and town jewel - not to mention TV star, just like Lambeau Field, but alas Mike Ilitch, George Jackson (and the DEGC) along with Detroit Mayors and lackadaisical City Council conspired to allow it fall into 'demolition by neglect' and maybe ultimately into demolition by wrecking ball or melted down to scrap.

Full Count (Aguilar / May 28)...doesn't tell the full story of the decline and fall of historic Detroit Tiger Stadium. George Jackson, of the DEGC, has lied repeatedly to the media and then complains about the attention given to Tiger Stadium development efforts. The final out has not been made - the final chapter in Tiger Stadium has not been written, but if it is..history will hopefully finally tell the truth - that George Jackson and members of the DEGC lied to and misled the Corktown residents, the Detroit Planning Commission, and the residents of Detroit and Michigan. History may record that Mike Ilitch played a major role in the 'demolition by neglect' of historic Detroit Tiger Stadium and that he was a felon, who took $2 - 12 million dollars from the City of Detroit for the maintenance and security of Tiger Stadium and it doesn't look like he spent a dime of it on Tiger Stadium - history should ask as others should - where did the money go? The only difference between Ilitch and convicted felon, Adolph Alfred Taubman is that Taubman took from the rich and Ilitch took badly need dollars from a struggling city.

If historic Detroit Tiger Stadium falls to the wrecking ball, and melted into scrap - of history, it will not be because Ernie Harwell failed, or the Tiger Stadium Conservancy failed, or the Tiger Stadium Fan Club failed, or Frank Rashid failed, or Peter C. Riley failed, or Mickey Briggs failed, or the Fetzer Foundation failed, or Peter Huithwaite failed, or Harry Glanz failed, or any of the others that wanted to preserve and utilize historic Detroit Tiger Stadium - it will be because a Billionaire, his wife and other city politicians and leaders - didn't want to save Tiger Stadium for their own SELFISH reasons, maybe history will find those reasons.

Tiger Stadium is still not history. Save Tiger Stadium - call the Detroit City Council members, including Ken Cockrel, Jr (313 224 4505) and tell them to let Tiger Stadium live and prosper as an entertainment venue and TV star - like Fenway Park and Lambeau Field do.

Deadline nears in effort to preserve part of Tiger Stadium

The final out is coming up for Tiger Stadium, as the group seeking to save a portion of the historic ball field faces a Sunday deadline to come up with $369,000 to send the preservation effort into extra innings.

The preservation group -- Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy -- admits it doesn't have that kind of cash. Meanwhile city officials already have approved a demolition contract. They also point out they've seen no solid business plan to support the idea of keeping the old baseball diamond and 3,000 seats to create a Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and mixed-use development.
"It's bottom of the ninth, two outs, bases loaded and a full count," said Ernie Harwell, the Hall of Fame broadcaster who's a member of the conservancy. "We've made tremendous progress, we've got wonderful support from key people, but it's still going to be a battle."

The volunteer nonprofit conservancy maintains it has made progress in identifying short-term and long-term support for the estimated $15 million project, including a pledge by U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Detroit, to seek money from the 2009 federal budget.

But without either the money or another extension of the deadline, the only ball left at Tiger Stadium would be the wrecking ball.

Since last year, the city has given the conservancy group several extensions to come up with money to back its plans, but the Sunday deadline has significant weight. The city already has awarded a demolition contract to two companies to tear down the stadium. That agreement, approved in April, requires the companies to pay the city $300,000 to raze the entire stadium, or pay nothing to do the partial tear-down the conservancy group wants.

A total demolition is cheaper and leaves more iron and other material to be sold for scrap by the two firms, MCM Management Inc. and The Farrow Group Inc. The contractors want an answer on or before Sunday.

State Sen. Steve Tobocman, D-Detroit, House Majority leader and a member of the conservancy effort, said the group has made "great progress." Tobocman said he hopes the June 1 deadline can pass without a final decision. "I don't think the conservancy is delaying any progress," Tobocman said. "I think the real date is when the wrecking ball comes around to the part of the stadium we want to save. Hopefully, if you have the House majority leader and a U.S. Senator working on this, that can give us some time."

S. Gary Spicer, Harwell's attorney and also a member of the conservancy group, says the organization has identified other sources of financing for the project, from tax credits and foundations and some private donors. The conservancy hasn't asked for public donations yet, Spicer said, because the group didn't want to take money without knowing it had a "solid long-term plan."

City official George Jackson, who also is president of quasi-public Detroit Economic Growth Corp, said time is up. "We've been through now almost eights years of individuals and organizations that said they would renovate the stadium," Jackson said. "This is something that's never been done in history and you guys have given a lot of press to plans that never had a chance. But the bottom line it is a financial impracticality."

The cost of maintaining what the nonprofit wants "is astronomical," Jackson added.
"You need to know how difficult it is for us to maintain institutions that require contributions in general," Jackson said, citing the Detroit Zoo, Detroit Institute of Arts, Music Hall and Orchestra Hall. "They're basically venues that are doing what they are designed to do. And they do well, but it is still challenging in regards to fundraising and capital projects, operating and maintenance."

The flaw, he said, is that no city ever has found a new use for an abandoned Major League Baseball stadium."Its use was for a Major League Baseball game. It wasn't meant to be a condominium or a museum. The concept has to be practical and pragmatic and also cost effective. Not one legitimate developer -- throughout this whole process for all these years -- has stepped forward to do this," Jackson said."I understand people's sentiment and attachment to history, but let's look at the history of why this is never done," Jackson said.

Despite being caught in a squeeze play between time and money, the conservancy said it will continue its efforts until at least June 1.

BANK OF AMERICA, ERROR - INSULT, DETROIT FIST AD

Hello Detroit - Bank of America is here...

They announced there prescence in Detroit in full page ads in the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press with a close up and bad photo of the Joe Louis fist - which they thought represented Detroit - bad faux pas / error. I thought it was insulting to all Detroiters and to the Metro area.

They could have used the Joe Louis statue, the Dodge fountain, the UAW sculpture or a combo of both, RenCen photo, a overview photo of downtown, gathered a group of Detroiters and use a photo of them, but NO - they used the Fist, which has been the center of debate since its was installed. Detroit and its residents are owed an explanation of why this piece of sculpture was selected to respresent Detroit - Why???

I don't think it should represent Detroit - or its efforts to reinvent and restore itself as a city of promise and diversity.

DETROIT - ELLA BULLY CUMMINGS, MUST GO - CLEAN SWEEP

Ella BULLY-Cummings, the Detroit Police Chief, must resign, be fired, or removed from office by the DOJ or FBI.

She has now been tainted and implicated in the sex text message scandal involving Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty (now resigned). She apparently conspired behing the back of former Police Chief Jeffy Oliver (now resigned) with Christine Beatty and other to undermine Oliver and to make the Detroit Police Internal Affairs Section a politically responsible organ of the Mayor.

Ella has been nothing but a bobble head since her appointment as Chief by Kilpatrick after Oliver resigned. She doesn't appear to have the qualifications to be in charge of a big city police department and after seeing the texts messages and seeing her loyalty to the Mayor - she has forfeited any ethical claim to being Chief of Police.

Her DPD Reorganization Plan is complete failure, that closed police stations - thus closing needed jail space, increased patrol areas, damaged police-community relations, increased police response time, tangled police officers in a crime report system that left them desk bound longer, failed to implement a Verified Response System (for B&E alarms) and has had a continuing revolving door of police executives

The Board Of Police Commissioners have always failed in their oversight capacity, at least since, Coleman Young became mayor almost 30 years ago. Every police chief since Young has been a failure - because Detrot Mayors have either controlled them or failed to exercise responsibility to remove them when their failures became evident. Young and his chiefs and Archer with his problem chief and Kilpatrick with another bobble head chief.

Detroit has had a black mayor, black police chiefs and predominately to almost black city council for almost 30 years - now - and an all black school board - and look what we have - failure of leadership, failure of ethics, a city in decline (except for downtown) with a very high crime rate and a high school drop out rate that is appalling and a thorough disgrace.

I have been an outspoken critic of the Detroit Police Dept, its nepotism, croynism and favoritism and failure of this police executives - Detroit Police Officers have not failed its residents or visitors - but its police exectutives, its Mayors, its City Councils and School Board members have. Its time for a clean sweep. Its time the state and federal government come in and clean house, except that the Governor and Attorney General maybe tainted by Mayor Kilpatrick too.

Stating facts is not race baiting.Archer was a failure as Mayor of Detroit, not as bad as Young or Kilpatrick, but enough to set back Detroit.

He had a chance to clean up and improve the Detroit Police Department - He chose Dr. Joe Thomas, Jr of Southfield as Police Chief, but then he got cold feet and then chose Ike McKinnon.
I had great hopes for McKinnon, I offered to help him, but he began to choose old insiders to run the Department - he continued the nepotism, croynism, and favortism that was a cancer on the Department.

McKinnon then had an inappropriate sexual affair with a police officer and granted her special favors.McKinnon then lost control of the Department and allowed the promotional test answers to be given out to his special people. That ruined the lives of hundreds of police officers who passed the test, but lost promotions, pay raises and a better life - when it was found out and the test results nullified.

McKinnon was said to have resigned to become head of MGM Casion security etc etc..but the rumor is the FBI forced him out.Archer's son was also a problem.

And Detroit's problems grew and grew.

Until today - look at Detroit - not a world class city (as Archer wanted) not a great American city - but a city wallowing in scandal, bad city government, and bad schools.

KEN COCKREL JR., FUTURE MAYOR OF DETROIT? RISE UP - NOW

I voted for Kilpatrick, in 2001, because i thought he would clean up the Detroit Police Department, but he has decimated it - with poor selections of police chiefs and their poor selection of police executives. Detroit residents, visitors and police officers lives are more in danger today, than ever before. Detroit is an unsafe city, and there is lawlessness in the streets and corridors of Detroit Public Schools - this is not the path to becoming a great or world class city. I had great hope for Detroit and Kilpatrick - not any more.

I have voted for Ken Cockrel, Jr for City Council. I had great hopes for him to lift up Detroit, but he has not lived up to his potential. Over 8 years ago, he said he favored raising the age limit to 21 from 18 to become a police officer and other changes to raise the hiring standards for the Detroit Police Department. Now, the hiring standards are still too low - for a City griped by crime, and the Department was allowed to violate federal EEOC laws, creating a Department that hired because of race - not qualifications. The Department is understaffed and demoralized, Ken Cockrel would have protested loudly - but his son, says or does nothing.
Chief Ella Bully-Cummings should be fired by the Council.

Ken Cockrel, Jr told me after a meeting in Council chambers that Mike Ilitch, the billionaire owner of the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings - " your boy was right - he (Ilitch) owes the City money, and I will do everything to get it back". Cockrel was talking about the $2 - $12 million dollars that Ilitch has taken for the security and maintenance of historic Detroit Tiger Stadium, since 1999 - and there is little evidence that Ilitch has even bought a can of paint for the stadium. Cockrel called me, protesting an email to the media announcing his statement - but, Cockrel has done nothing to get the money back, maybe if he did, the City would still have more police stations and jail space for prisoners - or even a new police headquarters, or or or even a new jail with medical facilities to stem the lose of millions of dollars in excess prisoner medical costs. Ilitch is the 'emporor' of entertainment in Detroit. Ilitch who gets free police services for games is allowed to make millions without paying the City back, money that it is OWED.

Ken Cockrel, Jr. has the breeding, the education and the potential to be a great Mayor, and hopefully he will recognize that he must be take aggressive action to correct the problems of Detroit and that no one should be granted favors or free passes, just because they do business in Detroit. Kilpatrick has squandered and wasted his potential - Ken Cockrel, Jr. rise up and claim your potential - start today, don't wait for Kilpatrick to dictate your future.

Is the Mayor/Beatty going to lose representation and legal advice from the law department?

PO John Bennett was suspended 5 yrs without pay and benefits - facing no criminal charges - but merely for his free speech conduct. He was not able to use the law dept
attorney's..
I was suspended and lost 6 days pay and benefits - facing no criminal charges - but merely for speaking to Chl 4 about the Beatty traffic stop. I was not represented by the law dept.

Numerous police officers (4th Precinct) were suspended without pay and benefits were
suspended without pay and benefits - after being charged in narcotic related issues. They
were denied legal representation by the Law Dept - by City Council.

It's not fair, that the Mayor and Beatty receive legal representation and advice by the Law Dept - after being charged with criminal charges - Is It?
The Mayor has assembled his own legal dream team - but is the Law Dept available to him and his dream team? If so its not fair.

The Detroit City Council should examine these issues and suspend the Mayor's pay and benefits - and any legal representation or advice by the Law Dept
They should enforce this by ordering - the City Treasurer - not to sign any paychecks for the Mayor - and forbid the Law Dept from aiding a criminally charge Mayor/Beatty.

The Mayor if 'vindicated' has legal recourse to recover his pay and benefits, later - as police officers are forced to do....

BEWARE: Michigan legislators and business leaders, the Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick, has been publicly ensnared in a sex, lies (perjury) text messaging scandal that he and his supporters say, he can recover from, but has implications state wide.

Mayor Kilpatrick's 'urban legend' discounted by Michigan Attorney General Michel Cox, who state police investigators have testified to - that he obstructed their investigation - was a bachelor party at the Manogian Mansion, home of Detroit's Mayor's, in which Kilpatrick's wife, Carlita, was alleged to have feloniously assaulted an exotic dancer / stripper by the name of Tamara Greene, who was later murdered in a drive by shooting, after telling people she danced at the Mayor's party. Their was an alleged cover up, that now includes the Governor, Jennifer Granholm, the Attorney General, the Mayor and members of his administration including two police chiefs.Some people believe that the Governor, the Mayor conspired with Mike Cox to cover up the party, with Cox getting a weak opponent and no mention of his infidelity, in his reelection race.

Attorney Norman Yatooma, has filed a $150 million dollar lawsuit, against the City of Detroit, that now again includes the Mayor, his sex partner/chief of staff Christine Beatty, body guards, and other administration members. Yatooma has requested the text messages, emails, voicemails etc of 34 people including the Mayor, security guards (some of whom may have committed fraud in getting hundreds of hours of unearned overtime), police chiefs, and homicide investigators. The Mayor's troubles are larger than perjury and everyone should look at the big picture and take action to protect the state and Detroit.

Detroit has had ethical failures of leadership and poor leadership since, Mayor Coleman Young, including city council members and school board members. Detroit faces maybe its greatest test, now - don't be surprised if it ends badly.

Danger.....clear and present ...Danger...

The 8th police precinct bldg is a clear and present danger to Detroit school children and residents. It is in much worse shape than reported by Florence Walton of WWJ radio. There are broken windows with jagged pieces of glass ready to fall on anyone looking or going inside... the front doorway of the 8th precinct is open to trespass as is windows that are broken out - that can also provide entrance to the bldg..that appears ransacked....police paperwork is strewn in the lobby...the second floor detective bureau windows are broken out.. as is virtually every window in the precincts garage...desks - tables - typewriters are have been tipped over - collecting dust and surely vermin lurk in this place of refuge for them...any person - child - malcontent who has a grudge against police can go in and get a modicum of revenge ...glass can fall and kill a child,in a second or they could slip and fall inside - die - and no one would know...

This did not happen overnight or within the last week...has no city employee or city official noticed the continuing damage and desecration of this place that provided work and safe haven for Detroit residents and visitors...

The Mayor and Police Chief need to be halled into Blight Court, fined and made to be locked up in the closed jail cells and made to serve their time there...where prisoners no longer are held - where citizen groups no longer meet, where police officers no longer work to protect residents and visitors...where detectives no longer work to solve crimes and work to prevent crimes...where frightened victims of crime can seek refuge and help...

Detroit deserves its ranking as 'thee #1 most dangerous city in America' because the Mayor and Police Chief closed police precincts - doubled up police officers in police stations not designed or capable of holding twice the number of police and their equipment...of closing jail cells - so that police officers can not lock up some criminals (and criminals know that)...of leaving police stations open to trespass and destruction...the DOJ (is a convenient excuse - for jail closings) but tell that to a victim - violated by a criminal who should be in a city jail, but who roams free..free to commit crimes because their is no space at the 'police district lock ups'....and because the patrol areas are too large to properly and timely patrol and respond to a call for help...or to catch a thief, murderer, robber or rapists...

We have seen jail cell bars strewn on a vacant lot - as the 5th precinct was torn down - no more jail cells to hold prisoners. The 13th precinct will become a restaurant (?) as if Detroit had too many jail cells and tooooo few criminals / prisoners. This is the state of the Detroit Police Department - which for years I have tried to get the media to investigate these conditions - and which they have turned a blind eye, voice and ear...where have all the muck raking, investigative journalists gone - gone far away from Detroit... reportedly 35% percent of news is not reported because it will hurt the 'bottom line' - the revenue of a news agency - what a disgrace...

SOME HOMES JUST SHOULDN'T BE BUILT ! ! !

The costs of the Southern California fires fueled by Santa Ana winds, lack of rain and low humidity are still being tabulated: 500,000 to 1,000,000 residents evacuated, over $1,000,000,000+ (billion) in property damage, 8 people dead, untold wild animals (deer, rabbits, horses, squirrels, snakes etc) dead, firefighter and public safety salaries, federal and state aid and the other emotional costs still aren't known - what is known is that these are preliminary estimates - it will be months before total costs are finally tabulated.

Now the reconstruction must begin, BUT - with restrictions. State, local and federal regulators must protect the public from itself to ensure that the general public welfare is protected.
New zoning laws are needed to prevent people from building homes and businesses in the path of known potential danger areas.

No more homes built in fire prone areas with little of no means of acess or fire protection.
No more homes built on cliffs subject to landslides.
No more homes built in the bottom of a fish bowl (New Orleans) with water lapping at the top of the bowl.
No more homes built on the 'Outer Banks' (Carolina's) where seasonal storms destroy homes in the path of destructive storms.

Each year ice fishermen go out onto the Great Lakes or some small inland lake with their shanties looking to enjoy the sport, disregarding the depth of the ice - and who end up on slowly melting and drifting ice flows or in the water. The US Coast Guard or local sheriffs are called out, every year to risk their lives for people who placed themselves in harms way, - NOW is the time to say ENOUGH.

Governmental officials must think of the overall public good and safety, failure to do so now - would be a crime.

If government fails the public - then it is left to the insurance industry to raise premimums on homes and businesses, in known danger areas, so high and prohibitively costly, that only fools or excessively stupid rich people can afford them.

Mayor, City of Detroit to settle whistleblower suits for $8.4 million

Mayor won't appeal cop cases

The payout on the Whistle Blower case, by the humbled? Mayor, who still fails to take responsibility for his actions which created the situation. He was not acting as the Mayor of
Detroit - but in defense of his personal indiscretions, and he should be forced by the City Council to pay the $8.4 Million dollars, but a weak Council will never have the backbone to require this. The Mayor can seek donations from his family and friends mafia. The payout will not end the bleeding of tax dollars.

The Detroit Police Department on and about 2004, began to violate federal Equal Employment Opportunity Laws (EEOC), by not hiring white applicants for the Department.
Qualified applicants were ignored, lied to and cheated out of an opportunity to work for the Department by a policy that discriminated against them. This is under the Kilpatrick administration. A lawsuit if forthcoming. The Department is now 73% black, and lacking true ethical and responsible leadership.
The must hire Detroiters edict of the Mayor will incur even more lawsuits and payouts for the City and it is a racist policy that should be withdrawn.

The City also, will payout Millions of $$$$$ in the Grace v. Detroit Police Dept lawsuit, in which the Department has a residency requirement for applicants - the City lost, and hundreds of claimants are winners - but the City is the loser.

Kilpatrick must be held accountable. State and Federal investigations must go forward until the real truth is known.

The failure after four years to meet compliance with the Dept of Justice Consent Decrees shows Detroit doesn't have the leadership to comply with the law and protect Detroit residents.

Detroit has had poor political leadership - from its Mayors, City Council Members and school board members and a bad police department since - Coleman Young and it continues today - that needs to change, but it won't because the people of Detroit are being lied to and lead by people with poor ethical and leadership skills.

The burden of proof is preponderance of the evidence and the Plantiffs did show that they were fired for trying to report and investigate criminal misconduct by Mayor Kilpatrick, which was their duty.

The City just spent $7.million dollars paving 10 acres of Belle Isle - where did this money come from - come from - the taxpayers of Detroit.

And now comes word to contradict the Mayor - he lied - Detroit has a budgeted $40 million dollar fund to pay for lawsuits against the City.

And look for $$$$$ Millions of dollars to be paid to @ 400 complainants in the Grace v. Detroit (Police) residency lawsuit, that the City lost - compensation packages are being prepared now - some will go out by the end of September. In this lawsuit the Plantiffs won because the City would not take applications for the Police Department from suburbanites.

The DPD is also facing a lawsuit for violating Equal Employment Opportunity Laws (EEOC) in and around 2004 - EEOC laws - for not properly processing white applicants.- where are the civil rights activists - now, more millions to be lost by the Kilpatrick / Bully-Cummings adminstration. SAVE TIGER STADIUM

You can help save historic Detroit Tiger Stadium.
There is no reason to demolish Tiger Stadium, the City had no money and no developers for the site. The plan announced by the City was just smoke and mirrors to deflect publicity generated by the new Tiger Stadium documentary - Stranded at the Corner -....
Detroit has Ford Auditorium sitting on prime / primo riverfront land that has been vacant twice as long as Tiger Stadium and has not developed a plan for it...prime riverfront property.
Herman Gardens has been cleared for years, 140 acres of ranch land - now, and no developers are coming forward...so so so why the rush to demolish Tiger Stadium.
The answer, Mike Ilitch owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, who is the defacto custodian of Tiger Stadium is afraid that the site will compete with his other entertainment venues for business. He has accepted over $4. million tax payer dollars to secure and maintain
Tiger Stadium and as you can see as you drive by it, he hasn't spent the money on Tiger Stadium.
The FBI has been asked to investigate where the taxpayer money went.
Boycott Little Caesars Pizza locations and call the Mayor's office (313 224 3400) and the City Council (313 224 4504) and tell them save Tiger Stadium as an entertainment venue and to accept proposals to develop it.

Park land once developed can't be reclaimed
Detroit should not sell, park land for any purpose.
Detroit has too many abandoned homes and sites,
too many abandoned vacant lots.
Detroit needs to tear down abandoned properties and
assemble them in parcels that can be used by developers
There is no need to sell park land to developers in Detroit
Mayor Kilpatrick has taken the -friends and family program
to far - we saw it in the Rackam Golf Course case - the bidder
